In 2023, there were a number of animated movies that became popular and made good box office. For a long time, the leader in 2023 was the animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which only recently lost the status of the biggest box office hit of the year, giving it to Barbie.
Another animated movie that has been gaining popularity with audiences is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is the first part of the sequel to the 2018 Spider-Man animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie came out a week later than Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid and managed to take away from audiences at the cinema, which was one of the reasons for its failure at the box office. This summer we also get the release of Elemental from Pixar, the animated musical Lady Bug and Cat Noir: The movie from Jeremy Zag and Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken from Dreamworks. And for the fall, we have two of the year’s top animated musicals left to look forward to – Trolls Band Together and Wish.
“Trolls 3” or Trolls Band Together is a sequel to the 2016 animated film Trolls and a follow-up to its 2020 sequel Trolls 2 or Trolls World Tour. In the storyline, Poppy learns that Branch has a secret, he was once part of her favorite boyband BroZone along with his brothers, Floyd, John Dory, Spruce and Clay. BroZone broke up when Branch was just a kid, and Branch hasn’t seen her brothers since. But when Branch’s brother Floyd is kidnapped by a pair of villains, pop stars Velvet and Veneer, Branch and Poppy embark on a journey to find the rest of the brothers and rescue Floyd.

Another this year anticipated animated musical is the Disney movie “Wish”. This movie is partly dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Disney, so in it they tried to combine 2d and 3d styles in animation. The main character of the movie is a 17-year-old girl named Asha, who must save her kingdom Rosas and defeat King Magnifiko.

The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 22, 2023. There is a small possibility of its postponement, because of the actors’ guild strike (AG-AFTRA strike) that is going on now in the U.S., as Disney will not be able to use the actors who voiced the main roles for marketing, but this probability is quite small, as there are already appearing more and more different movie merchandise: books, toys, dolls, besides there is a big possibility that Disney still wants to get profit from the movie during the Christmas and New Year season.
Also, musical cartoon Spellbound, which was originally supposed to be released in 2022 and then in 2023 on apple TV+ has been delayed again and is now expected in 2024.
